A big meltdown

A meltdown is not misbehavior or a tantrum. It's a nervous system that has run out of room. The child in your care isn't giving you a hard time; they're having a hard time. Your calm, quiet presence is what helps most.

Things to try

  • Lower your voice and get down to their level, slowly. Say one short, true thing: 'You're safe. I'm here.'

  • Clear away demands: no questions, no instructions, no 'look at me.' Less language is more help.

  • Stay nearby and wait it out. If they're safe, let the storm pass without fixing anything. Only intervene if they are truly in danger of hurting themselves or someone around them.

  • One more thing to try, and two things to skip, when you open the full guide.

Safety first, teaching later. Right now, quiet and presence are the whole job until the meltdown passes.
